Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism research group
The Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism (APNM) research group aims to lead and integrate applied research in physiology, nutrition, and metabolism that underpins multidisciplinary advances in performance and health, translating mechanistic insight into impactful practice and policy.

The APNM research group is a key component of RISES, contributing a substantial number of research outputs and generating significant research income from industry, professional sport, charities and governing bodies.
Importantly, at the heart of our research is a pipeline of dedicated, curious and ambitious post-graduate researchers.

Our core areas of activity
Sports Nutrition
We conduct translational sport nutrition research that integrates mechanistic and applied approaches to optimise performance, recovery, and athlete health across elite and real-world settings.
Our work has directly informed athlete fuelling strategies, highlighted gaps between evidence and practice, and shaped policy and applied guidelines in sport and high-performance environments.
Strength and Conditioning
We investigate the physiological and molecular adaptations to training and loading strategies to inform evidence-based strength and conditioning practice. Our research advance understanding of how training stimuli drive adaptation, supporting practitioners to optimise performance and long-term athlete development.
Rhythms and Environment
We examine how environmental and physiological stressors interact with human biology to influence performance, adaptation, and health outcomes.
