Ship Handling Course

Our Ship Handling Courses are bespoke, tailored to a client’s specific requirements. To train masters and deck officers before being assigned duties that may required them to handle ships in the confines of harbours or ports.

Duration: Three Days

Prerequisites:  OOW (Deck) or higher CoC

Teaching:  Theory sessions supplemented by practical ship handling exercises on bridge simulators.

Course overview

The course therefore suits primarily for those deck officers with limited "hands-on" ship manoeuvring and handling experience prior to taking up their first command or converting to vessels with sophisticated or unusual manoeuvring systems. Although more complex propulsion types will be referred to, the training concentrates on conventional single and twin screw vessels.

The course comprises training in pivot point variations, propulsion effects, types, effects and limitations of rudders and thrusters, operation of helm, propulsion and thrusters, effects of wind and current, and use of tugs.

Based upon specific requirements, we can also tailor the course to specific ship or propulsion types or harbour/port areas. The pool of our instructors include experienced pilots, and captains holding centuries of cumulative ship handling experience in all types of environments and regions.
