Proof of Concept

Simulation-based Proof of Concept (PoC) studies provide a safe, cost-effective environment to test and validate new maritime ideas, procedures, or designs before real-world implementation.

They allow stakeholders to explore scenarios that are too risky, expensive, or complex to reproduce at sea. The Centre offers proof of concept students for development of new ports, modifications to the existing port layouts, trialling new ship types or sizes within existing ports.

Port development and changes

Simulators enable detailed assessment of port modifications, expansions, or operational changes. PoC studies can:

  • test new navigational layouts, berth arrangements, and traffic management systems,
  • analyse vessel traffic flow, congestion, and collision or grounding risks,
  • evaluate emergency response strategies and port operational protocols.

At the LJMU Maritime Centre, customised port area models can be built in the simulator environment, allowing realistic testing of proposed changes and supporting informed decision-making, risk reduction, and optimisation of port operations before physical implementation.

Ship and vessel model development

Simulators are essential for developing and validating new vessel designs. PoC studies can:

  • assess handling characteristics, manoeuvring performance, and propulsion configurations,
  • test vessel response under varying environmental conditions,
  • evaluate bridge procedures, control systems, and automation technologies.

LJMU Maritime Centre has the capability to construct bespoke ship models within its simulator environment, enabling iterative design testing to ensure vessels meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards prior to entering service.
