Research within the School of Engineering

Producing world-leading research

Research undertaken by the School of Engineering is based within the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Research Centre, Mechanical Engineering and Materials Research Centre, Liverpool Logistics Offshore and Marine Research Institute and GERI.

In the latest research assessment (Research Excellence Framework 2014), seven of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Research Centre’s academics submitted to the Unit of Assessment 13. 100% of these research outputs were assessed as internationally excellent (3*), while 71% of the submission was ranked as internationally excellent (3*). 98% of the research submitted within Maritime and Mechanical Engineering was considered world-leading, of international importance or recognised internationally.

Expertise

The School has expertise within the following key research areas:

  • New materials and devices for future microelectronic industry
  • New characterisation techniques for VLSI devices
  • Development of advanced techniques for variables-speed electric drives
  • Qualification, modelling and aging prediction
  • Development of novel control techniques for power electronic converters
  • Modelling, simulation and experimental characterisation of power electronic converters and variable speed drives
  • Maritime logistics and offshore engineering
  • Mechanical engineering and materials
  • Advanced manufacturing electrical power

The School leads engagement in marine and maritime research and, through its International Association of Maritime Universities membership, is connected to a world-wide network of 53 maritime universities from around the world. Thanks to our successes within research, our academic courses are kept at the forefront of developments in the field and our students study alongside leading experts. Our research also supports innovation in the engineering and maritime industries and helps our members form key connections with both international universities and research and development centres.
