Professors

Professor Jatin Burniston
Research group lead and Professor of Muscle Proteomics

Email: J.Burniston@ljmu.ac.uk
Phone number: 0151 904 6265

Jatin specialises in the dynamic analysis of muscle proteomes using the stable isotope, deuterium oxide.

Professor Jonathan Jarvis
Professor of Sport and Exercise Science

Jonathan’s research interest is in the adaptation of muscle to exercise training, and the use of programmed stimulation to activate and rehabilitate weak or disused muscles.

Professor Claire Stewart
Professor of Stem Cell Biology

Claire’s research interest is in the regulators of skeletal muscle adaptation, in health and disease, with injury and disuse, in elite sport and across the ages.

Visiting Professor Stu Phillips
Professor of Kinesiology

Stuart’s research is focused on the impact of nutrition and exercise on human skeletal muscle. He is keenly interested in diet- and exercise-induced changes in body composition.

Academic Staff

Dr José Areta

José investigates the effect of varying energy intake through manipulation of carbohydrates, protein and fat, on adaptation to exercise and physical performance.

Dr Dominic Doran

Dominic’s main research interests include the role of exercise and nutritional supplements on gastrointestinal function, as well as the role of prehabilitation and rehabilitation on cancer related outcomes.

Dr Kelsie Johnson

Kelsie’s main research interests include female physiology and metabolism, and obesity management.

Dr Richie Kirwan

Dr Juliette Strauss

Juliette’s interest is in substrate metabolism and particularly in strategies to understand female specific physiology, metabolism and subsequent nutrition needs that influence health and performance.

Post-Doctoral Researchers

Dr Jennifer Barrett

Jen’s research focuses on exploring exercise metabolism and nutritional interventions aimed at enhancing the health outcomes of individuals living with type 2 diabetes, as well as the impact of aging, examining both physiological and molecular mechanisms of insulin resistance and sarcopenia.

Dr Yusuke Nishimura

Yusuke uses a proteomics approach to study skeletal muscle health, including Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD) and aging mechanisms.

Dr Connor Stead

Connor uses dynamic proteomics to analyse the skeletal muscle adaptations to exercise training.
