Maritime SuperSkills
Developing apprenticeship standards for the maritime sector
Maritime is a national priority. 95% of UK imports and 75% of its exported goods are transported by sea, and the sector generates over £13bn for the UK economy.
The Liverpool City Region has one of the largest clusters of maritime businesses outside London, across four areas – shipping and ports; maritime services for a burgeoning renewable energy cluster; maritime engineering; and freight distribution and logistics – and it’s growing fast. It’s therefore no surprise that the maritime sector offers opportunities in diverse roles requiring a wide-range of skills.
Apprenticeships are a core element of Government skills policy, but the standards that govern apprenticeship delivery are not yet available at all levels and across all occupations. The Maritime SuperSkills project team is providing employers with the dedicated resources needed to map and develop apprenticeship standards for the marine and maritime sector. Driven by regional need, the project outcomes have national relevance. The result is a skills progression pipeline for career progression within this growing sector, from school age upwards.
