Books and eBooks: adding to a Reading List
To check for and add a book or eBook to your reading list, select the Search the library option under the Add button.
In the Basic Search panel type in your search terms - this can be author/titles/key or a combination. Use the Filter option in the results screen to limit your results to books. Use the Drag and drop to list button to drag it into a section in your list. Remember to add an Essential or Recommended tag.

Copying from one Reading List to another
You can copy from one reading list to another reading list and we recommend you copy section by section, as this will carry over any notes or tags you may have added to your references.
To copy a section, select the 3 dots at the side of Section title then select Copy section. In the Copy into list select the reading list code you want to copy it to and select Copy.
Repeat this for all the sections you want to copy. You will need to go into the reading list where you copied the sections to and remove the “Copy to.." from the section headings.

Digitising a book chapter or journal article for a reading list
You can request an Electronic Key Text (EKT) by completing a Digital Scanning Request form. More information about the Digital Scanning Service can be found on the Request service webpage.
When the EKT is available Library Services will add it to the relevant reading list.

Editing a Reading List
There are several edit options available. Select the three dots to the right of the section name or item record that you wish to edit, and you will see the options available to you.

How to manage the Sections in a Reading List
A new list or unpopulated reading list will have one default section: Section 1 with a Dummy record.
You can rename by selecting the 3 dots to the right of the section title and create as many sections as you. Once you have added a reference to your section, delete the Dummy record.

Journal articles: adding to a Reading List
To add a journal article to your reading list, select the Search the library option under the Add button.
In the Basic Search panel type in your search terms - this can be author/titles/key or a combination. Use the Filter option in the results screen to “article.” Use the Drag and drop to list button to drag it into a section in your list.

New book orders: print or eBook purchased?
Library Services has a “digital first” policy so where possible, we will purchase an eBook in the first instance and print copies dependent on the tag.
Essential texts: we will purchase more than one print copy in accordance with student numbers.
Recommended texts: we will purchase at least one print copy.

Ordering a new book for a Reading List
To add a book not already held by LJMU Library and to generate an order, use the Manual entry option under the Add button or the Cite It! option. You will need to complete the mandatory fields indicted by a red asterix and add an Essential or Recommended tag.

Out of Print titles on reading lists
Out-of-print titles are difficult to source, and we cannot buy multiple copies, so if there are not already copies on the shelf in the library, please consider removing the out-of-print title from your reading list.

Reading List tags - what they mean
Books and eBooks must have an Essential or Recommended tag attached to the record which will determine the number of copies Library Services will purchase.
Essential texts: we will purchase more than one copy in accordance with student numbers.
Recommended texts we will purchase at least one copy.

Webpages: adding to a Reading List
To comply with Copyright Law, you should link to webpages, reports, and other online materials.
To add a webpage to your reading list, select the Manual entry option under the Add button. There are 2 mandatory fields indicated by a red asterix (or star): Title and Type.
Work your way through the form adding the URL or web address into the URL field, add any notes on the final screen and select Add to save details. Alternatively, you can use the Cite It! option.
