As study abroad and exchange students, you will attend classes with other LJMU students and are assessed in the same manner. The most common form of teaching is formal lectures with supplementary group tutorials, seminars and practicals, where discussion and group participation are strongly encouraged.
You may initially find that the method of teaching and assessment varies across the modules you will be studying. It is important to note that there is a strong emphasis on independent study within each module. Module leaders are there to support your learning.
The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences employs a diverse range of assessment methods across its degree programmes to ensure comprehensive evaluation of student learning and skill development. These assessments include:
- traditional written examinations and essays
- practical evaluations
- laboratory reports
- oral presentations
- group projects
- case studies
- interactive technology
- videos and reflective portfolios
This variety supports the development of both academic knowledge and applied skills, catering to the multifaceted nature of sport and exercise science.
Semester 1 (Fall): Students complete their academic programme in December, submitting assessments before the end of the semester as set out on Canvas, the University's Virtual Learning and Engagement Platform.
Semester 1 exams take place in January of the following year, normally held online. If alternative arrangements are in place with your home institution, assessments will be set for completion and submission prior to the end of Semester 1.
Semester 2 (Spring): Exams are held during the final weeks of the semester (weeks 32-33). You will have the opportunity to sit exams during this period as it is part of LJMU's assessment window, unless there are alternate arrangements with your institution.
The School of Sport and Exercise Science utilises a numerical grading scale at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Your grade will always reflect the quality of your work. A full rubric for each assessment with feedforward prior to submission and feedback post-submission are provided in each module through the module homepage on Canvas.
Transcripts of results
Exchange students at LJMU receive transcripts after the end of their study period, specifically at the end of Semester 1 and 2. Results are typically available on the MY LJMU student portal, providing a detailed breakdown of assessment results.
Please note:
Both Semester 1 and 2 transcripts are officially ratified at the end of the academic year by the Board of Examiners in June. Until that point, all marks are provisional. Official transcripts will not be available until that point.
As a student within the school Sport and Exercise Science, you will be allocated a personal tutor, who will act as your main point of contact and liaison throughout your time here.
Your personal tutor plays a key role in supporting your academic progress and overall wellbeing, offering guidance on academic matters and module choices, as well as providing pastoral support.
Regular engagement with your tutor is essential, as it ensures that any issues or concerns are identified early and appropriate support can be put in place. Building a strong relationship with your tutor can enhance both your academic and personal experience of your academic exchange.
