World Congress on Science and Football (WCSF)

The World Congress on Science and Football (WCSF) is the global leader in football research. Since its inception in 1987 by Prof. Tom Reilly of Liverpool John Moores University, it is hosted biennially by Universities around the world and has evolved into the leading scientific conference for all codes in football.

Key research themes

The congress themes are multi-disciplinary and dynamic with the ever-evolving football landscape, such as:

  • sport science,
  • sport medicine and rehabilitation,
  • performance analysis,
  • strength and conditioning,
  • psychology,
  • scouting and recruitment,
  • computer and data science.

Delegates represent scientists, practitioners, and educators with a shared interest in football and goal of advancing football performance, education, and health.

The Congress is conducted in a friendly atmosphere, which favours and encourages wide participation. The quality of research presented and materials produced are at the cutting edge of knowledge and technology. Presentation formats include keynote speakers, invited symposia, and oral and poster research communications. 

WCSF is overseen by the International Steering Committee on Science and Football, ensuring its continuity and commitment to fostering innovation in performance, health, and education within the football community.

WCSF 2027 in Liverpool

In 2027, the congress will return to Liverpool, UK to celebrate its 40th anniversary. At the home of football science, WCSF will gather in the vibrant city centre of Liverpool to honour its legacy and drive the next generation of innovation in football performance and health.

The three-day conference will be hosted by Liverpool John Moores University in the heart of the city. At the home of football, the programme will cover a broad spectrum of topics in football science, presented by leading experts in the field, and a diverse applied and social programme.

In addition, a special feature includes the Prof. Tom Reilly Memorial Lecture, presented by an outstanding scientist in football research. Early career researchers have a chance to be awarded with the Young Investigator Award.

Liverpool is a wonderful city and rich in culture. Home to two cathedrals, the Beatles, a historical waterfront, two renowned football clubs, leading universities and thriving independent businesses.
