Networking and Distributed Systems
Learn more about the Networking and Distributed Systems
The Networking and Distributed Systems Group conducts internetworking research.
The Networking and Distributed Systems Group focuses on building systems and frameworks for both networked appliance solutions and services. Due to the quality research the Group undertakes, members of the Networking and Distributed Systems Group have established an international reputation in the following research areas:
- Mobile/wireless networks and systems
- Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Software-Defined Wireless Networking (SDWN)
- Dynamic spectrum access and cognitive radio networks
- Cloud and edge computing
- Internet of Things (IoT) and applications
- Distributed and multimedia systems
- Network management and optimization
- Critical infrastructure systems
- Green computing
- Communication protocols
The Networking and Distributed Systems Group recently worked on Wi-5 (What to do With the Wi- Fi Wild West) – a €2.1 million funded by the Horizon 2020 (H2020) Framework Programme of the European Union. As part of Wi-5, researchers developed smart solutions to improve connectivity for Wi-Fi services. The project has significantly boosted the efficiency and access of Wi-Fi services.
From 2018, we having been working on the DCMS-funded Liverpool 5G project as part of a collaboration with Liverpool City Council, MerseyCare, the University of Liverpool and others to support health and social care in the city. Our work on this project is to develop optimisations for the meshed mmWave backhaul network to support dynamic service requirements.
In addition to this, the group made a highly significant contribution to the latest REF assessment exercise, including a substantial portfolio of research outputs and our impact case study that was rated 3* (i.e. very considerable impacts in terms of their reach and significance).
Collaborations are central to our work. Consequently, researchers from our group have formed national and international partnerships both within academia and industry including Orange (France), Telefonica (Spain), TNO (the Netherlands), Blu Wireless (UK), Zaragoza University (Spain), UNSW (Australia), and many others.
