Accommodation for International students

LJMU has partnerships with several approved student accommodation providers in Liverpool.

Important
Accommodation provided is only for single students enrolled and dependants cannot be accommodated.

There are two types of student accommodation:

LJMU approved accommodation and private student accommodation.

Some student accommodations have a list of requirements for international students, and the most common are:

• to provide a UK-based guarantor
• to pay the rent in full
• to pay the agreed number of instalments in advance

Prices and facilities can vary and students are advised to explore the options and choose the one that best suits their needs.

International students can also choose to rent private (non-student) accommodation.

Students moving to Liverpool with dependants will not qualify for student accommodation and must look for private accommodation.

Finding private housing can be a long process and therefore, students are advised to start their search as early as possible. Most private accommodations require international students to have a UK-based guarantor.

You may also be asked for:

• rent in advance (up to one year’s worth) 
• a guarantor outside the UK with a certain amount of savings or income

Private accommodation can be found online, or through property search websites such as:

• Zoopla
• Rightmove

Liverpool also has a vast number of estate agents that you can contact to help you with your search.

The prices below are an approximation as of March 2023.

The area covered is the city centre (L1/L2/L3) and between a 5 to 20 minute walk from LJMU campuses:

• a shared flat single room in a 6 bedroom is around £400 per month
• a studio is around £450 to £700 per month
• a one bedroom flat is around £650 to £1000 per month
• a two bedroom flat is around £850 to £1200 per month
• a three bedroom flat is around £1100 to £1600 per month

Properties outside the city centre are less expensive. For instance, the monthly rent for 85 meter squared  furnished accommodation in the city centre is on average £900 whilst outside the city centre in L8 and 15 are around £700 per month.

Utilities for one month (heating, electricity, gas) for two people in an 85 meter squared flat is approximately £200.

Some properties will include bills in the rental price.

Please note
If you chose to live in accommodation outside of the city centre you would need to add transportation fees. Monthly tickets for public transport in Liverpool are approximately £56.

When searching for accommodation we recommend keeping these in mind:

• search as soon as possible to secure your first choice
• if you are travelling with dependants and have not secured accommodation ahead of travel, we suggest you initially travel alone and stay in a hotel in Liverpool until you have found long-term accommodation
• verify which campus you would study at (City or Mount Pleasant) and look for accommodation in that area to avoid additional transport costs
• when searching through rental platforms, use a map view to refine your search geographically
• check the listing of the property for example - the date it is available from, tenancy period, if bills are included (council tax, electricity, water, Wi-Fi etc.) if pets are allowed, disclosure of dependents and how many bedrooms there are
• other things that you need to consider when selecting your accommodation are the distance to your nearest GP, supermarkets, transport links and if you have children the nearest school

Always check what is around your accommodation using a map view. Check for pubs or noisy restaurants in the vicinity for example, as the noise level can be a nuisance, especially after hours if you are living around the city centre. To check a pub’s authorized activities, permitted timings visit the Public Register Premises search on the Liverpool City Council website.

To access support on student accommodation contracts such as cases like early termination of tenancy use the Liverpool Student Homes service by sending an email. Or you can email Advice2U.

Be aware that rental scammers can lure students with false listings. Please be careful when selecting private accommodation. Check if the property is legally registered by searching the register of licensed properties on the Liverpool City Council website. Your private landlord or agent may request a ‘Right to rent’ code. You are advised to register with a GP (doctor) as soon as possible after you arrive in Liverpool. You can find your local GP by searching on the NHS website with your postcode. Once you find a GP, please contact them to register at the surgery. You can also search for a dentist on the NHS website.
