Reading for Wellbeing
Being at University where students are encouraged to read for a degree, books can often be associated with study, assignments and deadlines. However did you know that books can also be a fantastic way to manage emotional wellbeing? Evidence suggests that books are an effective form of self-help. This is called Bibliotherapy and refers to the use of books for self-development and psychological support.
Liverpool John Moores University would like to introduce a Bibliotherapy initiative that has been set up by the Counselling Team in connection with Library Services and supported by the Students Union. This is a project involving the use of therapeutic books for staff and students.
These books have been specifically chosen by our Counsellors, Wellbeing Advisors and Mental Health Team as well as the Wider Team within Student Advice and Wellbeing and colleagues across the University.
We believe that our book collection will benefit individuals therapeutically but also aid us in our ability to talk more openly about the way we are feeling. Essentially we hope that these books will increase awareness of mental health issues and the importance of emotional well-being.
Explore our curated Bibliotherapy collection
Our large collection of bibliotherapy books cover a wide range of issues such as anxiety, depression, loneliness and include a variety of approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy to mindfulness.
Ranging from psychoeducational books that provide us with the tools for change, to books with real narratives that are insightful and empowering. We hope you will take this opportunity to see for yourself the benefits of Bibliotherapy.
We have especially tried to include books that we hope students can identify with. For example, books relating to the pressures of academic life and the student experience.
Please see our full list of therapeutic books that we recommend. Our book collection is continually being developed but we are pleased to present our list of books that are currently available in the library. Please see a selection of our Bibliotherapy books that have been reviewed so far.
Therapeutic books
Therapeutic books can be helpful independently or alongside seeing a mental health professional. However, please note that although these books can often provide all the help needed, they can also highlight the need for further support. Please do not hesitate to contact the services available at the university or your GP if needed.
Please note that our LJMU libraries also offer a range of leisure reading books which we fully recommend for enjoyment and wellbeing. Plus, in connection with LJSU Literature Society they host a monthly book club.
We lose ourselves in books, we find ourselves there too.
