Armed Forces Covenant
Liverpool John Moores University is an Armed Forces friendly organisation and signed the Armed Forces Covenant on 11 October 2021.
The Armed Forces Covenant ensures members of the Armed Forces community are treated fairly in our communities, economy and society. This is something that is echoed within our own LJMU vision and values, underpinning our commitment to providing opportunities for people of all backgrounds and supporting them to flourish.
Read our full pledge to the Armed Forces.
To champion our commitment, organise activity and ensure the voice of the Armed Forces continues across LJMU, there is an established cross-university Armed Forces Steering Group, with membership open to all staff and students.
LJMU policing lecturer Steve Jones, sport coaching lecturer and Armed Forces Champion Dr Gus Ryrie and PGR student John Goulding are all veterans and share their personal reflections on how important the covenant is.
Ministry of Defence recognition
In October 2022, we were awarded bronze under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) acknowledging how we have provided support to the Armed Forces community and defence by going above and beyond our covenant pledge.
In May 2023, we were awarded silver status under the scheme, owing to the considerable progress made in supporting and championing the contributions of the Armed Forces community, through appointing our first Armed Forces Champion and the formalisation of a cross-university Armed Forces Steering Group, as well as the introduction of a dedicated Military Veterans and Reservist Policy.
In August 2024, we were awarded the highest badge of honour for supporting the Armed Forces community, receiving a gold award in acknowledgement of proactively demonstrating our forces-friendly credentials as part of our recruitment and selection processes, our support for reservists and cadet force volunteers within the workforce, and for advocating support to defence people issues both within the university and with external partner organisations.
