Dr Kate Shemilt

Kate is a registered pharmacist of the GPhC, with a range of experience working within clinical practice and academia. After successfully completing her pre-registration training at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Kate continued working as a rotational hospital pharmacist. In 2005 she gained her Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy at Keele University before moving to the Republic of Ireland where she specialised in Oncology at St James's hospital, Dublin.

Kate completed her PhD in collaboration with the Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust in 2015. For her PhD, she investigated the impact of electronic prescribing systems on healthcare professionals working practices. Kate is a member of the Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics research group. She supervises undergraduate and postgraduate taught (Masters) students in the fields of clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice. Her research interests focus on patient safety, specifically relating to medication errors, medicines optimisation and the use of electronic prescribing systems.

Kate has been a member of teaching staff within the School of Pharmacy since 2014. As a Senior Lecturer she is actively involved in teaching on the Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) programme and postgraduate pharmacy courses. Kate holds a PgCert HE (distinction) and is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Kate's current administrative roles include Competency Lead for Dispensing on the MPharm degree and Programme Lead for the PG Oncology Pharmacy Practice CPD courses. Kate is a member of the British Oncology Pharmacy Association (BOPA).
