Pharmacy Health Checks
The School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University has a long and distinguished history. We are one of the oldest providers of pharmacy education in Europe, with roots dating back to 1849.
We provide high-quality teaching that combines a strong scientific foundation with practical, hands-on learning.
Free screening for LJMU staff and students
We offer a cardiovascular screening service to LJMU staff and students. Where we will assess your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. This is a student-led health check, where students are supervised by qualified staff.
This check can help detect potential problems early. Even if you feel healthy, this will allow you to take steps to improve your health.

What the pharmacy health check involves
Blood pressure check
Our students will take a blood pressure reading and explain whether it may be higher than normal.
This is a quick and easy way to measure an important indicator of your heart health.
Raised blood pressure can increase your risk of serious health problems. These include heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and heart failure.
Cholesterol
Our students will perform a rapid blood test to measure your cholesterol. This will involve drawing a small sample of blood from a finger prick. The blood is analysed during the consultation to determine whether your cholesterol is raised.
Raised cholesterol can lead to the build up of plaque in your arteries. This increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases.
Height, weight and body mass index
Our students will measure your height and weight, and then calculate your Body Mass Index.
This will help you to understand whether you weight is normal for a person of your height.
Being overweight can increase the risk of developing heart disease, as well as type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer.
Diabetes risk screening
Our students will ask you some screening questions, and perform some simple measurements.
These measurements will calculate your risk of developing diabetes.
Diabetes can lead to serious long-term complications. This includes heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, nerve damage, and vision loss.
Comprehensive medical history
Our students will ask about your medical history to check if you may be at risk of uncontrolled high blood pressure. They will look for any past conditions that could increase your risk of heart disease.
Location
Pharmacy health check clinics take place in a dedicated consultation room space on the first floor of the James Parson’s Building (Byrom Street campus).
