Research within the School of Nursing, Public and Allied Health

Our breadth of expertise in the health and social care field means we understand organisational, professional, practitioner and service user needs.

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, 68% of LJMU’s health-related research was considered world leading or internationally excellent. We collaborate on research projects with other institutions and health and social care service providers.

We focus on a specific practice-related problem or investigate an aspect of health and social care where there are gaps in current knowledge.

Research expertise

Our research draws on best practice and evidence to develop and test interventions, evaluate services, explore experiences, and carry out theory-driven research.

We use participatory approaches, with a focus on co-production and community-led research wherever possible. Thanks to excellent relationships across local authority, NHS, community and third sector organisations, community and service users help to inform and shape our research priorities and delivery.

For us, research is about impact, and the range of research themes covered in the school reflects real-life needs. The ultimate aim for our research output is to positively impact service users and communities locally, nationally, and internationally.

Our participant and public involvement and community engagement activities was recently commended by the Nursing and Midwifery Council alongside our engagement of our students in the school’s research programme.

If you are looking for a team to help facilitate health-related community engagement activities, please contact us to explore options.

The school’s research activity is coalesced around six main themes:

  • Promoting physical, mental, and social wellbeing
  • Identifying and addressing health inequalities
  • Supporting professional practice
  • Palliative and supportive care
  • Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Science
  • Evidence-based learning and teaching.
