LJMU e-Racing team history

LJMU made its Formula Student debut in 2009 to 2010. We achieved the best ever result for a first-year team with a 21st place finish overall.

Previously racing under the name 'LJMU Racing Team', the cars ran with internal combustion engines.

The following season saw the team compete in Germany, finishing 38th overall. Back in the UK that same year, we secured 18th place and ranked as the 4th best British team.

Being part of the LJMU Racing Team as a student gave me invaluable hands-on experience that have shaped my career.

Now, as a staff member I enjoy giving back by supporting students and seeing their hard work come to life on the track.

It’s rewarding to watch them develop the same passion and skills that first inspired me.

From strength to strength

Momentum grew in 2011 to 2012, when the team placed 12th at the UK event, ranking second among British entries. Later that year, we secured 6th place and a first win in the skid pad event in Spain. Success followed in 2014 with a top UK finish in Spain and 4th place among home teams at Silverstone.

These early years established the LJMU Racing Team as a strong and competitive presence at Formula Student. A strong foundation has allowed future teams to take on the next big challenge: transitioning to electric vehicles.

The move to electric

A major shift came in 2017, when the team transitioned from combustion engines to electric vehicles and rebranded as 'LJMU e-Racing'.

We were among the early UK teams to commit to EVs. In 2018, our Class 2 entry placed 5th overall, securing the position of second-best UK university.

In 2020, the pandemic reshaped the competition format, with events moving online.

Teams competed through lap time simulations, including a virtual Silverstone. LJMU e-Racing made their mark by winning the Assetto Corsa Endurance event.

Recent years

Since returning to in person competition, the team has directed most of its efforts to designing a fully custom battery pack and modifying the car design to accommodate this.
