Facilities within the School of Computer Science and Mathematics
The School of Computer Science and Mathematics has first-class facilities.
The School of Computer Science and Mathematics provides access to nine specialist teaching laboratories, equipped with over 400 Windows PCs to support learning across computing, cybersecurity, games development, software engineering, digital forensics and data science.
Linux environments are available through virtual machines, enabling students to work across multiple operating systems and technologies.
Our facilities are designed to provide hands-on experience using the tools and technologies encountered in industry. Specialist resources include PlayStation development platforms, XRY mobile forensics technology, embedded systems development kits, and local and cloud-based computing infrastructure that support teaching, project work and research activities.
Students also benefit from dedicated specialist environments, including:
- Games Development Lab with PlayStation development kits and industry-standard games technologies.
- Cyber Security Laboratories featuring specialist security software and virtual lab environments for cyber defence, ethical hacking and digital investigation activities.
- Digital Forensics Facilities equipped with professional forensic software used in digital investigations and law enforcement contexts.
- Software Engineering Facilities equipped with software engineering developer kits to allow students to develop their own projects.

Within this building, our School has nine teaching labs containing: 400 PCs, three research labs, one postgraduate room, a console lab and a software development lab containing iMacs.
Social areas
The City Campus, which houses the School, has a variety of social areas that provide excellent spaces for students and staff to debate, discuss and socialise.
Games lab
Our dedicated Games Development Laboratory provides students with access to specialist hardware and industry-standard software used throughout the games industry. The facility supports practical learning in game programming, graphics, artificial intelligence, virtual and mixed reality, interactive media, and user experience design.
Technology and equipment
Students have access to a range of professional development technologies, including:
- Sony PlayStation Development Kits through LJMU's participation in Sony's PlayStation academic programme.
- Console game development facilities, supporting development and testing across games platforms.
- Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) technologies, enabling students to create immersive interactive experiences and explore emerging applications in games, simulation, and digital entertainment.
- Unreal Engine development environments, used extensively across modules in advanced games programming, graphics, artificial intelligence, game physics, user-interface design, and mixed reality development.
- Collaborative software engineering infrastructure, including professional source control and team development tools that mirror modern studio workflows.
- High-performance computing facilities that support graphics rendering, games programming, simulation, and content development activities. The School houses more than 150 high-spec computers across its specialist teaching laboratories.
LJMU is a member of the PlayStation First international academic programme and an Academic Partner of Epic Games, providing students with access to industry-relevant technologies and opportunities to develop skills aligned with current professional practice.
Cyber Security lab
Our Cyber Security Laboratory provides students with access to specialist technologies used to explore digital security, cyber defence, network protection and cyber investigation. The lab supports hands-on learning, enabling students to develop practical skills in secure system design, penetration testing, network security and digital forensics within a controlled environment.
Students can gain experience using dedicated cyber security tools, virtualised environments and specialist forensic technologies, helping them understand how organisations identify, prevent and respond to modern cyber threats. Industry-focused activities, practical exercises and real-world scenarios give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a safe and professional setting.

Forensics lab
Our forensics lab contains specialist software and hardware, such as Forensic Tool Kit (FTK) Autopsy / The Sleuth Kit, Wireshark XRY,and Encase software. This equipment is used within many police forces. Students gain hands-on experience using industry-relevant cyber security and digital forensics technologies within dedicated laboratory environments.
These include mobile device forensic platforms such as Cellebrite and MSAB XRY, alongside leading ethical hacking and penetration testing tools including Kali Linux, Nmap, Metasploit, Aircrack-ng, and Empire.
Our virtualised cyber range environments provide a safe setting for forensic investigations, vulnerability assessments, network security analysis, ethical hacking, and incident response activities, giving students practical experience aligned with professional cyber security and digital forensics practice.
