CPD Examination of the Newborn

If you are a Registered Midwife/Neonatal Nurse, this course will enable you to acquire the knowledge, skills and expertise to become professionally competent in the examination and assessment of the newborn.You will also be able to take responsibility and accountability for the discharge examination.

The course integrates theory and practice; practical placement experience in the clinical environment is compulsory. You will study the following topics:

• foetal and neonatal physiology, including common congenital defects and abnormalities
• the influence that maternal health, family history, labour and perinatal events has upon the health of the newborn
• the concepts of philosophical, ethical, legal and professional issues relevant to advanced midwifery practice and extending the role of the midwife
• the theoretical basis of healthcare research, audit and quality assurance
• the critical appraisal of the health status of the full term infant

You will complete 300 hours of learning:

• 60 theory hours
• 120 clinically focssed hours
• 120 hours spent on reflection and private study

The programme will be delivered via:

• practical skills development sessions
• seminars
• group work
• lectures
• tutorials

Examination of the Newborn runs once or twice a year with a flexible start date. You will attend for 12 days of formal study arranged over a 5-day block week and 7 follow-up days covering a 30 week period.

• Extra Requirements

  In order to be considered for this course, you must:

  • be a registered midwife/neonatal nurse currently on the NMC Professional register
  • be a registered midwife/neonatal nurse currently in practice with at least 2 years experience
  • have commitment from unit paediatric staff and ward managers
  • have evidence of previous Level 5 study or equivalent
  • identify a clinical assessor who support your study on the course

To apply for this programme, you are required to complete an LJMU CPD application form. You will need to provide details of your qualifications and curent employment.

Both the theoretical and clinical aspects of the course will be assessed.

You will be required to:

• complete 5 summatively assessed examinations of the newborn, with a completed clinical portfolio
• present a case study with a supporting paper

This Continuing Professional Development module can be studied within the BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care Development award framework or as a single CPD.
