Dr Newson, Prof Doc; C.Psychol; FHEA; HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist.
Reader in Applied Health Psychology

Associate Director For Research & Innovation, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust.
International Society of Behavioral Medicine, Organizational Liaison Chair

Dr. Newson is a Chartered Psychologist and HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist (Health) with extensive experience in applied health psychology across academia and healthcare practice. As an innovator in her field, she has led initiatives spanning research, knowledge exchange, and real-world healthcare applications. Dr. Newson’s academic career focuses on engaged scholarship, leveraging applied research to drive change in healthcare and community settings. Her impact includes informing policy and strategy worldwide (instrumental impact), advancing health psychology and behavioural medicine (capacity-building impact), and reshaping healthcare practices by fostering collaboration and innovation (conceptual, network, and creativity impacts).

Health Psychology is a niche field, with only 680 HCPC Registered Health Psychologists in the UK (HCPC, 2023) and limited global training opportunities. Dr. Newson is at the forefront of enhancing professional skills and advocating for health psychology’s advancement worldwide. She has championed pivotal initiatives such as establishing Health Psychologist roles in healthcare, developing professional training programs, and promoting health psychology as a global profession.

In recognition of her expertise, Dr. Newson was elected Chair of the Organisational Committee for the International Society of Behavioral Medicine (ISBM) in July 2023, representing 27 countries. She leads efforts to promote networking and capacity building in behavioural medicine, such as initiating a Behavioural Medicine Community of Practice in the United Arab Emirates, bringing together academics and practitioners to share knowledge. As a member of ISBM’s Training & Education Committee, she supports the global promotion of behavioural medicine.

Dr. Newson’s work bridges public health and the management of long-term conditions. Her previous NHS experience as a clinical practitioner, public health commissioner, and applied researcher enables her to bridge the ‘knowledge-language gap’ between academia and healthcare. This expertise led to her appointment as the Health Psychologist representative on the National Practice Board of The British Psychological Society in July 2023. Internationally, Dr. Newson collaborates with partners in Australia, Singapore, Morocco, and Brazil to ensure research benefits service users and translates into real-world healthcare and community practice.

Between 2015 and 2025, Dr. Newson served as Programme Leader for the MSc Health Psychology and Co-Programme Director of the Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). Both programs are accredited by the British Psychological Society, with the Professional Doctorate recognised for HCPC registration. She is a BPS RAPPS-approved supervisor, national assessor, and mentor to MSc, trainee Health Psychologists, and PhD candidates.

In January 2025, Dr. Newson began her role as Associate Director for Research & Innovation at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust. Here, she is developing a strategy to integrate physical and mental health comorbidity research while enhancing the Trust’s research capacity and ensuring research translates into practice.
