Clinical experience
After completing a Bachelor of Nursing degree in 1993 from the University of College Medicine Cardiff I commenced my nursing career in South Wales firstly working on dermatology ward, then a general medical / diabetes ward and then finally in to a day case dermatology unit where my interest in skin cancer began. In 1999 I was appointed to the one of the first specialist skin cancer Macmillan nursing posts in the UK moving to the University Hospital of Birmingham - a regional centre for the diagnosis and treatment of primary and secondary skin cancer. This gave me the opportunity to develop specialist skills and knowledge and to undertake a MPhil to look at the factors that influence a patients to perform skin examination.. A move to Merseyside then followed with a short time as a specialist minor surgery nurse and then a lengthy period of time as a Macmillan CNS for skin cancer at the regional centre for skin cancer. This enabled me to consolidate my nursing skills and to develop leadership along with communication skills an essential prerequisite for good nursing care. The completion of post registration education supported the development of advanced practice . A further post as a Matron / Lead Cancer Nurse at a Children's hospital enabled me to further develop leadership, management and operational skills.
Nurse Education
I completed my PGCE in 2003 , very early in my nursing career whilst working in Cardiff . Throughout my clinical career I have been involved in teaching on dermatology courses for nurses , involved writing and presenting at conferences locally and nationally. A move into education in 2020 was a natural progression. Working in higher education enables me to share my passion for good nursing care to others.
