Nursing and Advanced Practice

Faculty of Health

I am a registered adult nurse and completed my pre-registration training at the University of Central Lancashire in 2014. Since qualifying I have worked across both primary and secondary care, with the majority of my clinical career spent within the community setting.

I made the move into nursing a little later in life. After having first completed both a BA and an MA in Urban Planning, I later embarked on undertaking a PGCE in Secondary Education which lead to me teaching Geography, mainly on a supply basis across secondary schools in the North West. I have always been passionate about helping others and of the value of education, and both my career and life experiences to date have led me firstly into nursing and now into higher education here at LJMU!

Relating to my clinical experience, my first position post qualifying was as a Band 5 staff nurse on a busy specialist respiratory ward within a Merseyside hospital. Here I gained a breadth of experience in caring for adult patients presenting with a range of respiratory conditions, including complex respiratory care and end of life care.

Having undertaken community nursing placements as part of my undergraduate studies I always knew that community nursing was where I wanted to practice. As a student nurse, I found myself enjoying the ability to build longer term professional relationships with patients and their families that working within the community enables. Often in the acute environment, you don't get the chance to develop therapeutic relationships to the same extent, as patients are often transient and it is rare that you get to experience the full patient journey.
Moving on from acute respiratory care, I transitioned to community nursing where I remained for the next 9 years. Starting off as a Band 5 Community Staff Nurse, I then progressed to gain my Specialist Practitioner qualification in District Nursing and transitioned to the role of Band 6 Team Leader whilst retaining responsibility for my clinical caseload. During my time with the District Nursing teams, I developed extensive experience of Palliative and End of Life Care, Wound Care and Skin Integrity, Leg Ulcer Assessment and Management, Health Promotion and Education as well as the management of patients with complex social and often chronic health conditions.

In 2022, remaining with the same trust, I moved into the Community Tissue Viability team working across the whole of the Warrington and Halton Boroughs. I further developed specialist knowledge and skills in the field of Tissue Viability and wound care and gained further experience of clinical teaching, which ignited my interest in making the transition from clinical practice to academia.

I started in post as Lecturer in Adult Nursing within the Undergraduate Nursing team in April 2024. While the transition from clinical practice to academia has been a huge learning curve, I am very excited for the opportunity to bring my own nursing experiences to help support and guide both current and future nursing students at LJMU as they embark upon their own nursing journeys and careers. I am very much looking forward to learning and developing as a budding academic and to be able to contribute to the teaching within the school and also to wider nursing research to enhance the learning experiences of LJMU students across all nursing disciplines.

My teaching interests include Tissue Viability, Wound Care, Leg Ulcer Assessment and Management, Medicines Management and Non Medical Prescribing, Palliative and End of Life Care and Clinical Skills.
