Paul joined LJMU as Professor in September 2024.

Paul's research specialisms span the arts. His main research interests cover film, architecture, literature, and music.

Paul is the author of the books The Cultural Construction of London’s East End (2008) and British Films of the 1970s (2013), and editor of Don’t Look Now: British Cinema in the 1970s (2011), British Rural Landscapes on Film (2016), British Art Cinema (with Brian Hoyle, 2019), and Cinematic Starchitecture (with Merrill Schleier, 2025).

Paul composes, records and releases music as 'Clevelode'. The album 'Muntjac' was released by Fenny Compton in July 2024: a 'mix of songform and questing experimentation': Derek Walmsley (The Wire, July 2024).
