Dan is a Senior Lecturer in History teaching in the areas of imperial, African, and global history. Dan’s research examines UK policy towards southern Africa. He is currently undertaking a British Academy (BA)/Leverhulme Trust funded project analysing British policy towards cultural relations with Rhodesia from 1963 to 1980. This follows on from a doctoral project which culminated in a monograph entitled 'British Cultural Diplomacy in South Africa, 1960-1994'.
Dan has published articles in leading international and diplomatic history journals and obtained multiple research grants from bodies such as the Royal Historical Society, the British International Studies Association, and the British Society of Sports History. Dan has worked collaboratively with organisations such as the British Council and AM Digital and is also a Research Associate at the University of Pretoria and an Extraordinary Researcher at North West University, Mahikeng. Dan has also written for the Conversation and appeared on Sky News to discuss contemporary South African politics.
Dan was the Course Coordinator for LJMU's Arts and Humanities foundation programme from 2019 to 2024. As part of this role Dan engaged in a research project alongside two colleagues analysing the importance of arts and humanities foundation years and best practice on such courses. This culminated in a presentation at the Foundation Year Network Conference in 2022 and the publication of three journal articles.
