Why should I study a foundation year?

On Results Day you might find yourself considering, or even holding a place, to study a Foundation Year. Foundation Years can be an important stepping stone for many students – but if this isn’t a pathway you’ve considered before you might be confused about what they are, and what your university experience will be like.

We’re breaking down what a Foundation Year is and how two of our students, Gina and Macie, have found their experience of studying a Foundation Year with LJMU this year.

What is a Foundation Year?

A Foundation Year is essentially a preparatory program designed for students who may not meet the standard entry requirements for a degree program or who need to strengthen some of their academic skills before diving into university-level study. It typically lasts one academic year and covers key subjects relevant to the student’s intended degree, along with essential skills like academic writing, research, and critical thinking.

What type of students typically enrol in a Foundation Year?

Foundation Years attract a diverse range of students. Some may students who need to improve their grades or want to change their academic focus. Additionally, mature students returning to education after a break often find Foundation Years a great way to ease back into academic life.

Macie, Nutrition, BSc (Hons): 'This is definitely true of my experience. Even though I had wanted to study nutrition for my entire life, as a mother of two I thought I could find university difficult’.

Gina, Sports Nutrition, BSc (Hons): ‘My experience was different. After taking a gap year with the intention of joining the Army after travelling, I came home early due to COVID and began training at a new gym where  I realised how important nutrition is. From here I began looking more closely into it and started applying to Universities. I was initially going to a different university but after visiting the city I decided I didn't want to live there. I had previously visited Liverpool and decided to apply last minute to LJMU.’

Why should someone consider enrolling in a Foundation Year?

There are several compelling reasons. Firstly, it’s an excellent way to build confidence, especially if you’re unsure about jumping straight into a degree program. You get a solid grounding in the subjects that matter most to your degree, which can significantly boost your performance later on. Secondly, it’s a great opportunity to adapt to university life, especially if you’re coming from a different educational background or haven’t been in school for a while. Lastly, it provides a supportive environment where you can develop essential skills, making the transition to a full degree program much smoother.

Are there any misconceptions about Foundation Years?

Definitely. One common misconception is that a Foundation Year is only for students who didn’t do well in high school, but that’s not the case. It’s a strategic choice for many, including those who want to explore a new field of study or need to meet specific entry requirements. Another misconception is that it adds unnecessary time to your education. In reality, the skills and knowledge gained during a Foundation Year can actually save time by better preparing you for the challenges of your degree.

Was there anything you were worried about before starting your Foundation Year?

Macie: ‘Being one of the eldest as there would be a 10-year age gap between myself and most of the other students! I thought it could be a little difficult to get along with others with this in mind – but it wasn’t the case at all!’

Gina: ‘Writing a 4000-word essay after not having done any written work for 3 years.! But with all my assignments my tutors have been there to support me whenever needed.’

Any final thoughts for students considering this path?

Don’t see a Foundation Year as a setback—it’s a smart investment in your academic future. It equips you with the tools you need to succeed and can make your university experience much more rewarding.
