LJMU leading the way in the use of VR in business education

LJMU academics are leading the way in embedding learning with virtual reality (VR) into business curriculums.

Dr Oliver Kayas, Dr Chin Ong and Dr Victoria Jackson from Liverpool Business School have used the immersive learning techniques on modules within the MSc Management and Digital Business programme, enabling students to access this emerging technology and to apply it to business-related scenarios.

While VR and simulated learning is already well established across our STEM and health subjects, Liverpool Business School are providing students with a new set of valuable skills not traditionally provided through business education providers, ensuring that LJMU students are standout graduates to future employees upon completion of their studies.

Dr Kayas, Dr Ong and Dr Jackson used Meta Quest headsets with the Meta Horizon World application, introducing students to the basic controls and application of the technology before looking specifically at virtual customer service and virtual in-store customer experiences, complimenting their module topics.

Writing in a recent blog for the Chartered Association of Business Schools, the academics reflected on the positive student feedback from their pilot workshops: “Student feedback on this VR experience was overwhelmingly positive. The VR experience increased student engagement, with many students reporting that they enjoyed learning to use a new technology in an experiential learning environment, while also being able to understand how VR can be used by businesses to add value to their activities.”

The academics will trial further use of VR technology across a host of business modules and will compile their findings to indicate how use of this technology in business education might better support students’ learning and their ability to embrace the use of new technologies moving forwards.
