LJMU celebrates first anniversary of UK Malaysia University Consortium

The UK Malaysia University Consortium (UK-MUC) Secretariat based in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at LJMU, together with Education Malaysia London (EML) hosted the UK-MUC Celebratory Event & EXCEL Workshop at the High Commission of Malaysia in London on Monday 27 March 2023 to mark the one year anniversary of the Consortium.

The opening remarks were given by the High Commissioner of Malaysia in the UK, H.E. Dato’ Zakri Jaafar, who emphasized the importance of international collaborations and partnerships in the higher education sector and highlighted the long-standing relationship between both countries.

Professor Dhiya Al-Jumeily OBE, from LJMU’s School of Computer Science and Mathematics, gave a lively presentation highlighting the achievements of UK-MUC in 2022, the significance of sustainability, partnerships and artificial intelligence, which was very well received by delegates from eleven UK-MUC member universities, who discussed future plans for collaboration and innovation.

In the afternoon, Professor Madya Dr Wan Zuhainis Binti Saad, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), and Dr Maria Garraffa, University of East Anglia, ran a workshop on the Experiential Learning and Competency-Based Education Landscape (EXCEL) Framework.

The EXCEL Framework aims to produce holistic graduates who are highly- skilled and adaptable to change, creative, open to innovation and possessing attributes of a lifelong learner. It was developed and launched by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) Malaysia in October 2021.

Moving forward, the Consortium aims to build on the progress made in the past year and continue to strengthen partnerships and collaboration between UK and Malaysian universities. By working together, the Consortium seeks to drive innovation, research, and education that benefits both countries and the world at large.

This latest event and workshop builds upon the existing relationships fostered by LJMU under the UK Malaysia University Consortium.

This collaboration enhances mutual understanding at a global scale by nurturing international higher education in terms of teaching and learning, research and exchange of knowledge between the UK and Malaysia.
