Dr Alan Bury recognised for twenty year contribution to maritime education

Dr Alan Bury, Senior Teaching Fellow from the School of Engineering has been awarded the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service by Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal. 

Dr Bury was recognised by the state for his contribution to maritime education over the last 20 years.

Presented to no more than 20 recipients annually. Dr Bury is one of only 11 people who have been awarded the medal this year. Placing him amongst a very select few within the maritime sector. 

Dr Alan Bury said: “It’s an honour to have received this award and find myself now counted among such an inspiring list of previous recipients. It’s taking a while to really sink in. I’ve come a long way over the years, from a less than auspicious beginning but if I can do it then anyone can.” 

20 years in maritime 

Inspired by tales from his great-uncle who served in the Merchant Navy during the second world war, Alan finished school with a handful of GCSEs and decided to join the Merchant Navy, serving for ten years. It was in 2011 when Dr Bury came ashore to work in the Maritime Education and Training sector that he found his vocation, as an educator.  

The award recognises the time and energy, Alan has given to students and their education over the years and in doing so has ensured access to work opportunities, within the maritime sector, for individuals representing a diverse range of backgrounds. 

Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service 

The Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service recognises the often overlooked, but nationally important, work carried out by the men and women of the Merchant Navy, and their role in ensuring the safe movement of 95% of UK trade.  

The medal is the highest honour within the maritime sector and is awarded to those who are serving, or have served, in the Merchant Navy or fishing fleets of the UK, Isle of Man or Channel Islands who have demonstrated exemplary service and devotion to duty. Setting an outstanding example to others. 

At the awards

The award was presented to 11 recipients at the event in Trinity House, London. 

Maritime Minister Baroness Vere, said: “I am delighted that eleven mariners, have been selected to receive this very special honour. Their unwavering dedication, exemplary service and profound contributions have not only shown the UK’s maritime industry at its best but also set an inspiring standard for others to follow. Their achievements are a testament to the exceptional talent and commitment present within our maritime sector.”
